Proper Installation Matters For Your Marine Gearbox Coupling

The purpose of a gearbox coupling is to protect your boat’s drivetrain and reduce damage and vibration to your engine and transmission. Under normal conditions the polymer coupling is designed to be sacrificed in the event of severe shock load. This means you will want to make sure it’s installed properly, so it can do its job.

Tip #1 – Review the mating surfaces between the coupling and the gearbox flange

Make sure the mating surfaces are clean and that the bolt pattern matches the coupling.  The coupling should seat precisely into the gearbox flange and replicate its profile on the opposite face, allowing the propeller shaft flange to align and connect correctly.

 

Tip #2 – Get the torque right!

This applies to both the coupling-to-gearbox-flange connection AND the coupling-to-propeller-shaft connection.

Once the holes are lined up and you’ve inserted the appropriate bolts, washers and nuts, you’ll need to tighten the bolts to the required torque in 2 steps.

Tighten in the sequence shown here, to HALF the recommended torque rating for the bolts in your coupling:

Then tighten, using the same sequence, to the final recommended torque rating. The lock washers should be fully compressed.

 

Tip #3 – Plan ahead for easy removal in the future

To make it easier to remove the propeller shaft coupling in the future, apply a thin layer of waterproof grease to the threads of the “short” bolts that screw into the coupling before tightening them.

 

Tip #4 – Check for run-out

Slowly rotate the shaft by hand with a dial indicator on the gearbox output flange – then the propeller flange. Run-out of approximately .004” (.01mm) is acceptable for most power transmission applications.

 

Tip #5 – Don’t install and forget: Do a post-installation check!

Check the coupling for heat build-up after 2 hours of sea trials. During normal operation if the coupling is noticeably hotter than the gearbox flange, or if the bolts have become loose, the flanges may be misaligned. This is something you’ll want to prevent or the service life of the coupling will be noticeably reduced.

Then, after approximately 15 hours of operation, re-check the bolts in the propeller shaft flange for torque accuracy.

 

It may seem like a lot of checking, but it’s worth the effort to ensure the correct functioning of your coupling and engine, and ultimately, your vessel’s performance.
